8 Hair Oiling Mistakes That Might Be Doing More Harm Than Good

8 Hair Oiling Mistakes That Might Be Doing More Harm Than Good

Hair oiling has been part of haircare rituals for generations. But more oil, more often, doesn't necessarily mean healthier hair.

Here are 8 common mistakes to avoid.

1. Leaving Oil on Overnight

Longer isn't necessarily better. Leaving oil on for extended periods can leave the scalp feeling greasy and may contribute to buildup.

Try: 30 minutes to a few hours before washing.

2. Oiling Immediately After a Meal

There's no strong evidence that oiling redirects blood flow away from digestion. But if you're uncomfortable after eating, simply wait until you feel comfortable before your massage.

3. Applying Oil to a Very Dirty, Product-Heavy Scalp

Adding more oil to an already oily scalp can contribute to buildup.

Try: Start with a reasonably clean scalp and apply a light amount.

4. Oiling an Irritated or Flaky Scalp

If you're experiencing persistent dandruff, itching or scalp irritation, oiling may not be the solution.

Instead: Speak to a dermatologist about what's causing it and whether a medicated treatment is needed.

5. Using Too Much Oil

Your scalp doesn't need to be drenched.

Use a small amount on the scalp and focus more of the oil along the lengths and ends, especially if your hair is dry.

6. Tying Your Hair Too Tightly After Oiling

Oiling followed by a tight bun or ponytail can put unnecessary tension on the hair.

Try: A loose braid or simply leave your hair down.

7. Oiling Every Day

You don't need to oil your hair daily for it to benefit from a massage or conditioning treatment.

Try: Once a week and adjust depending on your hair and scalp needs.

8. Thinking Every Oil Works the Same Way

Different oils have different fatty-acid profiles and properties, and their interaction with the hair fibre can vary.

Some oils may penetrate the hair fibre more effectively than others, while some primarily coat the surface.

The takeaway: Hair oiling is about consistency, not saturation. Use the right amount, give your scalp some breathing room, and choose an oil suited to your hair and scalp.
